Calvary Baptist Church in Montego Bay, Jamaica, is a long-standing Baptist congregation and community hub rooted in the island’s Christian heritage. Established in 1846, it is one of Montego Bay’s historic churches, noted for its active worship life, educational outreach, and social ministry.

Founded fourteen years after the death of Jamaica’s National Hero Samuel “Sam” Sharpe, the church emerged from members of the Burchell Baptist Church, where Sharpe had served as a deacon. Initially called “Second Baptist” or “Little Baptist,” it moved from Market Street to Corinaldi Avenue in 1979, where it remains today. The Sidney H. Helwig Auditorium was dedicated in 1984 and served as a worship space before the main sanctuary’s completion.

Calvary Baptist Church upholds the Baptist tradition of evangelism, social engagement, and community upliftment. Its ministries include youth, children, and young adult programs, with strong emphasis on spiritual formation and service. The church participates actively in the wider Jamaica Baptist Union network, hosting regional gatherings and peace initiatives such as the Jamaica Baptist Women’s Federation peace marches.

The congregation offers weekly worship services, education programs, and outreach through a dedicated resource center. Events often blend worship with cultural and civic engagement, reinforcing the church’s motto of faith through action.

Beyond its spiritual role, Calvary Baptist Church is a recognized landmark on Corinaldi Avenue and part of Montego Bay’s religious landscape. Its history and continued community focus make it an enduring symbol of faith and resilience in western Jamaica.
